How to prepare your film proposal

LAREINE TV

Your first message should make it easy to understand the work and continue the conversation. Before opening the LAREINE TV email template, bring together a short description, a viewing option if available and a clear account of your role.

Say what stage the project has reached

Begin with the title and format, then say whether the film is finished, in post-production or still in development. For a series, distinguish between a completed season, a pilot and a concept. This helps the reader understand what can be watched now and what you are proposing for later.

Write the story in one sentence

A logline introduces the central situation. Try naming the main character, what they want and the obstacle that makes the story move. Avoid stacking broad themes such as love, hope and identity without saying what actually happens.

Illustrative example, not a real film: “When the last bus leaves without her, a young sound recordist must persuade a stranger to help her reach a family celebration before dawn.” The point is a situation that can be understood immediately, not a formula every film must follow.

Add a short synopsis and a point of view

Develop that sentence into a compact account of the story. For an initial introduction, a few clear paragraphs are more useful than an entire screenplay. Explain the central journey and what makes your treatment specific. For a documentary, describe the subject, the access you have and the question guiding the film.

A brief director’s note can explain one important choice: perspective, setting, language or form. Use concrete details from this project. For a series, add the episode count and duration, and describe how the story develops beyond the pilot.

Make a viewing link easy to use

If you have a screener or trailer, check the link in a signed-out browser before sending it. Include any password, the version date, running time and available subtitles. Say if the edit is unfinished. A private viewing link is enough for a first approach; do not send a master file.

Describe your role and the available rights

State whether you are the filmmaker, producer, rights holder or an authorised representative. List the territories and existing distribution commitments you know about. If an item still needs confirmation, say so. Keep questions about duration, exclusivity, languages and commercial terms separate and ready for discussion.

Send a readable first message

Put the title and format in the subject or opening line, add your short introduction and viewing link, then finish with your name and contact details. Check that titles, filenames and versions agree. Send only material you are authorised to share; keep confidential scripts and sensitive personal information out of the initial message.

Use the creator page to open our email template and read the submission terms. A proposal is an invitation to discuss the work. Any rights agreement is handled separately in writing.
