Story, without spoilers
Salma grows up in a comfortable home with a frequently absent father and a difficult relationship with her mother. Gamar, hired to drive her around Jeddah, becomes a steady presence in her life. Across her childhood and teenage years, their everyday journeys develop into friendship. Yet growing independence also makes the unequal positions they occupy harder to overlook.
Context & recognition
Ahd Kamel's Saudi-British feature is set in Jeddah during the 1980s and 1990s. The coming-of-age story considers care, privilege and belonging through a relationship that begins as employment and becomes something neither character can define so simply.
